There are only a few women in the music industry that walk their way as consistently and courageously as Synje Norland - that follow their talent and inner voice as self-determined.
For nearly 10 years Synje Norland has been establishing herself as a slow-burn talent lying somewhere between the art of the weightless singer-songwriter and cinematic folklore.
With her looks and her qualities as a singer, many producers would have liked seeing her as the new pop starlet.
However Synje Norland wanted more than that. And she is capable of more than that.
She writes music for film & television, produces her own albums and videos and has created her very own niche in the music scene.
When you ask her why she started writing songs, she’ll tell you: “Because I wanted to know if I could do it.” Synje Norland simply enjoys challenging herself. So it’s no surprise that she called her new album
Who Says I Can't. Fearlessly she wrote, produced and arranged the whole album herself.
But this kind of soloing takes both time and energy. Five years have passed since the release of her second album To The Other Side. A long time, that has left a few dark scratches on her otherwise smooth songster soul. Who Says I Can't has a darker, more mature sound than its predecessor. The borders between sophisticated pop and experimental classic float and merge in many layers. Music like a film morphing into sound.
Right from the beginning always at her side - cellist Michael Becker. He understands Synje Norland’s music better than anyone, lending her music a backdrop made up of minors and striking subtlety. Yet Becker’s playing isn’t always lightly aesthetic, he can tear it up and even on occasion likes to disturb, always offering an exciting counterpoint to Synje Norland’s sometimes almost painfully beautiful expression. Together, Synje Norland and Michael Becker have created an enchanted soundtrack which perplexes attempts to categorize it.
A year ago Synje Norland moved back out to the country. Back to her home a few meters from the Danish border. This is where she has created her own cosmos of vegetable garden, poultry and recording studio. The expression of her unconditional desire for freedom and self-determination - for a life without compromise?
One might think, that she has arrived. At herself and the knowledge that nothing can be constrained. “Cause all I want to do is stand here by the Riverside and watch the river going by. All you want to do is catch another wave to ride, on the Riverside”.
But who knows what Synje Norland still has in store for us in the future? One wouldn’t be surprised if she was the next big wave herself. She certainly has the energy to be.
